Grocery Budget Tips: Tip 16 – Keep A Master Grocery Shopping List

Welcome back to the grocery budget series I am almost done writing.  In this series, I will share the top 20 ways that I can think of that our large family uses to keep the grocery budget from getting out of line.  To learn more, visit our introduction.  Here is tip 16:

Keep A Master Shopping List:  Most of us probably buy a lot of the same items month after month.  To save yourself the time of making a list every single time you shop, consider keeping a master list.  It’s a list you prepare, organized by category, that lists the items you most commonly purchase.  If you wanted to, you could also include the current price you normally pay so if you notice an item on sale you can quickly glance down to see if it’s a good deal for you or not.  Make this list on your computer so you can easily edit it and print a new copy out each month.  You can also find free templates online to help you get started.

I know it can be easy to fall into the thought process of, “I will remember it!” and I have my list down to a science too.  I know what I need to buy each month – but it really, really, throws me off when a store re-organizes and moves their store around.  Then I feel so unprepared – having my list helps me regroup so I remember all of my usual items as I get to learn the new layout.

Not only does this list save you the time of recreating your list month after month (or however often you grocery shop), but it can save you extra trips to the store for forgetting items that should have been on the list.
